You are on an island in the middle of a lake. The lake is in a remote part of the country and there has never been a bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

Every day a tractor and wagon gives hay rides around the island. Puzzled as to how the tractor had gotten onto the island, you ask around and find out that the tractor was not transported to the island by boat or by air. Nor was it built on the island.

Explain how the tractor got there?

Either

a) its a shallow lake
or
b) its a dry lake.

My guess is dry lake, as it gives rides 'around' the island.

Here in Griffith we have Lake Wyangan. It has two parts, a south and north lake. In 1932, I am informed, Griffith golf course surrounded the south lake and there was a gypsum mine to the north. The gypsum mine hit an underground spring one day and flooded overnight, creating the north lake with digging equipment flooded far below.

What was the question?

There are several options for getting a tractor to the island without a boat. The option above is one (prior to flooding), frozen lake another.

Ben, I am still not a maths teacher, but based on your observation, 27.

Bernie.

Thats correct. in winter the lake freezes, so the tractor was driven there.

A firefighter stood on the middle rung of a ladder, spraying water on a burning house. He then climbed up 6 rungs before the heat of the flames caused him to come down 10 rungs. After some minutes he was able to climb 18 rungs to the very top of the ladder. How many rungs did the ladder have?

29

6 up, 10 down, so its -4. goes up 18 rungs, so its 14. 14 top, 14 bottom, and he is standing on 1. 14 + 14 + 1 = 29

The correct answer is 28 days.

You walk into a dark room that contains a fireplace, gas stove and a candle. All three must be lit but you only have one match.

Which do you light first?

A shell is tied to the side of a boat.
The shell hangs 3 metres above water level.
The water rises 40cm every 1st hour and drops 10cm every 2nd hour.

If the tide continues to come in, how long until the shell is submerged in the water?

It won't, the boat will rise with the tide
